Hunting

Wild TurkeysScott County is one of the best places in the state to bag that trophy buck or bear. Every year, Scott County hunters bring in enough turkey and deer to place us on the state's top ten list, and that doesn't include the numerous small game opportunities including raccoon, squirrel, rabbit, and grouse. With acres of public land to chase your quarry through, your Scott County hunting expedition won't leave you disappointed.

Few places rival the immense beauty that a Scott County dawn or dusk can offer. Located squarely between the rolling hills of east Tennessee and the mountainous land of Virginia’s coal country, Scott County offers the best of both worlds. The county has a rich agricultural View from the Clinch Mountaintradition, which only enhances the hunting opportunities provided. In addition, the peaks and valleys offer some of the most beautiful scenery in the region. If you want to experience peace and tranquility during your hunt, the undeveloped countryside of the county can provide you just the getaway you desire. Whether the magical encounter with that majestic whitetail or trophy tom occurs or not, you will feel better for having been there and experienced that time in the woods.

Large portions of the 35,480 acre Jefferson National Forest are open to public hunting. For more information, contact the Clinch Ranger District Office, 9416 Coeburn Mountain Rd., Wise, VA 24293, or call (276) 328-2931. Hunting licenses are available at the Front Porch Store and Deli in Fort Blackmore, and information about hunting seasons can be obtained from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
